Everyone wants to make more money, but people are generally split into two categories:

Those who bring results after they are promised wealth first

Or

Those who bring the results first, then are rewarded by others afterwards

Let’s explore the two groups in depth.

Those who are motivated only after the promise of big fat paychecks are more like employees or mercenaries.

There is no right or no wrong with this kind of thinking, but consider: you are once again, trading your precious time for money. Instead of investing your time in an ASSET that generates money, you spend your time working on something that is short-term, limited wealth, and does not give you income long after you have stopped working.

Consider also, that this kind of short-term vision will only produce limited or temporary results at best.

Furthermore, our emotions get the better of us is when we allow our lives to be run by chasing the dollar. It is evident whenever an employee is offered a higher salary, more medical benefits and longer vacations, that their heart starts pumping faster.

A higher salary doesn’t mean less financial problems. On the contrary when your income goes up, your commitments, your tax bracket and your time spent in your company increases. The greater your salary, the weaker your position because if your boss is paying you a 5 figure income and calls for an emergency meeting, you had better rush over to the office no matter what else you are doing!

I think the best definition of an employee/boss relationship can be summed up as this.

An employee will only do the bare minimum to keep the boss from firing him/her and a boss will only pay the bare minimum to keep an employee from leaving.

Now let’s explore the other group.

There are many creative people, inventors, entrepreneurs, and business leaders who fall into this category.

An entrepreneur is someone who always has good ideas.

The first obstacle we need to overcome if we want to succeed in the second group is to stop working for money. What does this mean? Isn’t making money part and parcel of having good financial IQ?

What I mean by ‘stop working for money’ is not working for free. Rather, it means work so as to gain the necessary skills you need to be a successful entrepreneur. Allow me to illustrate:

If you lack the contacts for running a business, where would the best place be to look for contacts? Of course, your competitor’s customers.

How about product knowledge? Then work with a company that will teach you all the ins and outs of the tricks of the trade.

Not familiar with the production line of a factory? Work in one! Learn the ropes or manage the factory workers.

Fear of talking to people? Get a sales job where you will be forced to talk to lots of people. It is also a great way to develop perseverance!

Don’t you know that the best education you can get is in real life! Not at a lecture hall.

The bottom-line is: not everybody has what it takes to succeed as an entrepreneur!

It is not that easy. Many lack the perseverance, the creative mindset, the financial capabilities or the necessary people to get the job done and usually give up too early before any results can be seen! The fastest way to get those skills to succeed is to learn them hands on and you even get paid in the process! Don’t get absorbed with how much you are paid.

When Donald Trump was selecting candidates in The Apprentice, their first task was to go to the streets and sell lemonade! Many would find it a degrading task. But to The Donald, it was very important: If you can’t even do something as simple as sell lemonade, how on earth can you handle a daunting task like running the Trump Empire?

Again, let me emphasize:

Would you trade time for short term money? (Money stops coming in when you stop)

God created us with a brain. All we need to do is look around us and observe problems to overcome because every problem is an opportunity in disguise.

It is all up to you. You may or may not see the results in the short term, but by using our brains and the resources around us, we can create true value that others are willing to pay for what we have to offer.

One reason that so many people want to work from their homes is that there is no need for a large financial investment to begin an online business. Creating and running an effective online business is realistically comprised of several hundred, rather than 6, but this will serve as a guide for the direction of your efforts. Contrary to what you may hear rampantly on the Internet, there is no cookie-cutter, get-rich quick scheme on the web. Not only is every online business different, what works for one person or in one month may not work for another person or in the next month.

The Internet is constantly changing, and the online market is inherently different this year than it was last year. New technological improvements occur monthly, and impact the online business environment. What works for one individual when he is the first to sell a certain product a certain way may not work just six months later when he has sold his idea to 40,000 other marketers, and they all begin to promote it. Traffic generation tactics are significantly different than they were just a year ago, and hardly resemble profitable strategies three years ago.

These 6 Steps are simply the bare-bones skeleton of what has to happen for your online business to be successful. They are foundational, and although the implementation strategies are different today than several years ago, the basic steps remain the same.

1. Develop or discover a product. You must find a product that meets today’s needs. A 5 year old product whose resell rights you can buy for a dollar or get for free probably won’t meet the needs of today’s consumers. You must be willing to pay for the rights to sell a current , useful product, or become an affiliate marketer, where you promote a popular product, and in exchange are paid a percentage of the income from the sale.

2. Determine how the potential customers can view your product and see a sales presentation. If you develop your own product or purchase the rights to sell someone else’s, you will need a website. A few tips here: Rather than accept free web hosting, purchase your own domain name and pay to have your domain name and web site hosted by a professional web hosting company with a reputable history. If your free web hosting company goes bankrupt, they generally take your fledgling business with them.

3. Once you have your web site up and running, unless you are using an affiliate program that supplies a sales page, you must develop a sales script and web copy. Aside from your web hosting decision, this is probably the most important thing you can do. You may be tempted at first to write a sales pitch on your own, but unless you already have a lot of experience in the offline market writing effective sales letters, you need to, absolutely must, invest in a few courses on web copywriting. Be willing to spend some money upfront on learning this skill. Too many marketers try to wing it in this area and after a few months of losing money online, finally break down and purchase the knowledge to write a good sales pitch. Do it the other way around—buy the knowledge first, and start making sales from the beginning. Assuming you have been willing to spend some money on sales letter writing and a decent web host, you may be able to skimp in the traffic arena for awhile, if you have plenty of time. If you do not have money to advertise, nor time to seek out low cost advertising, you probably shouldn’t be attempting an online business. If you do choose to go the low-cost route—know two things up front—the returns are really low and you will spend vast amounts of time on traffic generation. Once you begin to make sales, you must invest your income in paid forms of traffic generation. If you do not, you will run out of enthusiasm for generating the free traffic, and without reinvesting the income from your first sales into advertising, you are sure to fail. Good sources of low-cost, but time consuming traffic are: writing articles and posting them to article directories, low cost classified ads, and ezine ads. You may see hyped-up ads for thousands or visitors for a low cost or millions of banner ads for another reasonable price—both of these methods may have worked 2 years ago, but they are a sure waste today.

5. Once you begin to get traffic to your online business site, you must keep detailed records of where the traffic comes from, and what percentage of visitors from each source are purchasing your product. If you have visitors that cost you $50 per hundred to come to your web site, but on average they only purchase $25 per hundred visitors, the income may feel good, but you are not profitable, and are losing money. By tracking your expenses on each type of visitor and by tracking your revenue on the same sources of visitors, you can determine which campaigns need changes or need to be eliminated and which need to be increased in intensity.

6. Have you ever considered getting into a home based business? The mere thought of trying to create a stream of income on the Internet sends chills down the spines of most average human beings. Making money online is simply not considered possible for "the average joe" these days. There are 2 main reasons why people don't take the first step into online business. One is money - they think it costs too much ( in many cases it does). The other reason is knowledge.

Or should I say, the lack of knowledge? Most people don't have any idea how net-business works. I mean, who knows how to get started making money on the Internet? It is a bit unclear isn't it? If you don't have someone to take you by the hand and show you how it's done then you are most likely going to bungle it unless you are an "Einstein." But take heart, it's not as bad as you might think. The Internet does offer many legitimate opportunities for building a realistic income right from your own home computer and it doesn't require huge amounts of money or a degree in web-based business to get started.

So, how does a newcomer to online business start the process of jumping aboard the money-making train? Let's start with finances. How much money do we want to fork over to get this train moving? Just because the start up costs are cheap does not mean you will be saving money. In fact, most of the time just the opposite is true, you will be wasting money. Generally speaking, I would stay away from eBooks and "how to" courses that you download off the net. Sure they are cheap, but you've heard the saying, "Ya get what ya pay for" right? Well, there's a reason why they say that. It's usually true! And in a lot of cases, these things are just outright frauds. With these products you will get your download and then a pat on the back by the seller saying "See ya later!", then you are basically on your own. So, what happens when there's something there you don't understand? What happens if you are unfamiliar with the terminology being used? What happens if you're like me, and don't have the patience to analyze page after page of bone-dry text? I can't count the number of eBooks, get rich quick schemes, and outright scams I have bought online. Then I sat there scratching my head, blinking like an owl, wondering why it didn't work for me.

The problem with most of these quick download products is that they don't provide any kind of support structure, whether it be online, phone or email (all three would be ideal). And that is exactly what a neophyte needs when getting involved in a home based business for the first time. The beginner needs someone that knows what they are doing to give them some backup if they get stuck. If you want to get into a worthy online venture which has a good support network, you will have to make a moderate investment. Good news is, it will not necessarily suck your bank account down to the last drop. Almost anyone can afford some of the effective programs that are on the net these days.

Now let's get down to some nuts and bolts. To make any substantial amount of money online you will absolutely need to have a website. And what's more, you are going to need something to sell with your website. Now don't panic. You will not need to design and build your own website from scratch unless you really want to. In which case, I say go ahead and give it a try. Just be warned, it takes time and knowledge to build a good website from the ground up. But there are alternatives if you are like me and would rather let somebody else do the "heavy lifting." I suggest looking for one of the many opportunities on the web that will provide you a website and a product to sell with that website.

Bear with me now, I'm going to rattle off a few things here. If you have ever heard the phrase "turnkey website", you may be familiar with one of, if not the premier way for beginners to make money online. A turnkey website is a website that is largely already set up and ready to go, with maybe just some minor customizing needing to be made. Think of it this way, it's like a house that has already been furnished with everything you would need for living in it. All you have to do is move in and rearrange the furniture the way you like, or maybe paint the walls the a different color. In a lot cases, these turnkey websites are provided by companies running their own affiliate programs. An affiliate program is where you enter into an agreement with a company to advertise a product or service for them and in return receive a commission when you sell that product or service. Thus, you would be an affiliate of that company. These turnkey affiliate programs are an ideal way for beginners to get started in Internet marketing because the buyer is set up with a fully functional website ready to make sales online; and the investment required is relatively small. There are thousands of people making money online right now with turnkey website-based affiliate programs. Just Google "affiliate programs" or "turnkey websites" and see what you find.

Another way many rookies make money online are direct-sales programs. In direct-sales programs the new webmaster is given a pre-built website and a product to sell with that website. The product is entirely owned by the new webmaster. It's a little different than the turnkey method, in that you can actually set up your own web hosting and domain name for your new website. This is great because you can "brand" your website with your own unique domain name ( example: www.domain name.com) and optimize it for search engines such as Google, which in turn can increase traffic flow to the website and consequently increase sales. Many people have asked me what forms of traffic are illegal in the eyes of google adsense. Some have said that they felt they were using totally legitimate methods to attract visitors to their pages only to receive the dreaded "adsense wrist slap email". Something like "It has come to out attention that ads on your site are being clicked by visitors using non-approved techniques…If this continues we will be forced to discontinue…etc.I think you get the message.
So what exactly are legal sources of traffic in the eyes of google adsense?

Well, google adsense says that clicks must come from genuine internet users. So isn't someone who clicks on a redirect sub-domain from bought traffic a genuine internet user. Not if the link is sending bulk traffic to your site from the same IP address. So most of the traffic you can purchase is illegal by adsense standards, but not all. Rule Number One:

Go for quality! You want to examine the product or service they offer. Make sure it is a quality product or an excellent service! Look at the people who are recommending it, and talk to people who have bought it. Make sure you are recommending a high quality product that comes from a company with great customer service, and is reputable enough to back up what they sell.

And make sure there is good value for the money. In other words, be sure they are not charging a ridiculous amount of money for something, which is not worth much at all!

This is pretty important since you are putting your reputation on the line by advertising or recommending the product or service you link to. It's almost like you are endorsing them. So, you need to make sure you are dealing with a company that's going to reflect well on your reputation. Don't ever promote something that's going to hurt your reputation!

Rule Number Two:

You've got to earn good commissions. In other words, if someone is only paying out 5% or 10% per product sold, this is pretty low. You want to deal with someone who thinks about the life-time-value of a customer and who will give you a fairly high payout. These Affiliate Programs are few and far between simply because most companies don't understand the value of a customer and will only give you a small percentage of the profit.

Let's use my company, The Internet Marketing Center as an example. We pay over 60% of our net profit to our affiliates. The way we work our Affiliate Program is we give our affiliates $65.00 for every course sold through their link to our site, whether it be a banner link or a text link. After the hard costs of the course such as customer service, credit card accounts, hosting fees and other expenses are calculated, we actually pay over 60% out to our affiliates. In other words, we pay out a very good commission! We even have a sub-Affiliate Program… which means that if you refer our Affiliate Program and they join underneath you, they get paid $65 per sale (just like you), and you get paid $20 for every sale THEY make. Just think if you had a few really hot affiliates who signed up underneath you making 10 sales a month… you would be earning over $500 a month just in the work THEY are doing. Basically you keep getting paid as long as they keep selling courses.

You see we believe in the life-time-value of a customer and are willing to give away a lot of our profit to our affiliates and offer them as many benefits as possible. Finding an Affiliate Program that thinks this way should be one of your top priorities when shopping for an Affiliate Program.

You want to deal with a site that has a 1% conversion ratio (which means that one out of every hundred customers you send to them turns into a sale). There are not many sites out there which are "experts" at turning visitors into sales, so make sure you go with an Affiliate Program which has sales copy and website design that "makes you want to buy". After all, you are sending them the potential customers, but it is their job to turn those potential customers into buyers (so you can earn your referral fee). The more they can turn those potential customers into buyers, the more money your make.

Going back to our numbers game example from before, if 5% of the visitors to your site click-through to your Affiliate Program site and THEY convert 1% of your visitors into a paying customer... you'd be making 1 sale for every 2000 visitors to your site.

2000 visitors to your site X 5% click-through rate = 100 potential customers X 1% buying ratio = 1 buying customer.

As I said before, it’s a numbers game!
Also keep in mind your pay out amount. If you are earning a $50 referral for that one buying customer, you are doing well… but if you are only earning a $10 referral fee for that one buying customer, you will want to rethink things.

It's worth your while to keep experimenting with different Affiliate Programs if you want to, because you can join and drop most of them as often as you like.

Rule Number Three:

Match the product or service to the theme of your site. If your site is about horses and horse products you don't want to be advertising music CD's or weight loss products (unless of course it is a weight loss product for horses! ). If you are selling horse products you'd probably want to be involved in an Affiliate Program which recommends other horse related products or maybe even become involved in Amazon.com and recommend great horse books. Make it something that has to do with your site or your industry. If you try to recommend website hosting services when your site is all about how to train a horse, you aren't going to get very far.

You need to target your clientele so that you are selling or recommending something that relates to what your visitors WANT. I can't stress this enough, it is very important! Provide links, services and products, which are related to what your visitors want! I am shocked almost daily by people who build a site and have products and Affiliate Program that are in no way related to each other.

Rule Number Four:

Another thing to be concerned about is the tracking software the Affiliate Program uses. You want to go with a company, which has good tracking software, shows your statistics (stats) in real time. You want stats that are easy to understand and that you can check at any point in time to see how you are doing.

Why?

If you post an Affiliate Program banner, you will want to be able to see how much the banner pulls for you, and how many sales it's generating. The same goes for a text link, personal recommendation, or an endorsement to your customer base… you want to be able to see how many visitors you are sending to the site and how many sales those visitors are generating.

Having real time stats allows you to compare the
difference in results between putting a button up and putting up a whole page recommending the product or service. Having real time stats so that you can go and check anytime and see how your promotional efforts are working and their effectiveness is really important. So it's important to see real time tracking, which gives you instant information on visitor and sales results.

You also want to be comfortable that the software they use is sophisticated, reliable, and will track all your sales. Why I emphasize "all" is because you want to make sure they track online, phone, fax, and snail mail orders. Many companies only track online orders (which means you get no credit for all sales generated by phone, fax or mail). Other companies use certain "inferior" software that will allow the sale only to be tracked about 80% of the time (which means you lose out on 20% of the commissions that are rightfully due to you). Other companies will only pay you if the customer visits through your link and buys right there… if they come back later and buy, you may not get credit.

We will talk more about this in other parts of the
lesson and go over it in great detail in the next…but for now, just be aware of it. I am not saying to not do business with a company which may have these problems with their Affiliate Program, I am just saying that you need to be aware of it before your become an affiliate.

Rule Number Five:

Be careful that you don't allow Affiliate Programs to clutter up your main site or the main goal of your page. Don't go crazy with Affiliate Programs and find 10 different Affiliate Programs that are perfect for your business and promote all of them on your site at the same time! It just clutters up your site and makes it look worthless. Concentrate on one, two or three Affiliate Programs (if even that many), this number all depends on the type of business you are running and what kind of clients you have.

I have joined a few Affiliate Programs and use them to promote other quality products to my clients (we will talk a little more about the power of this near the end of this lesson). I wouldn't want to join a pile of unrelated Affiliate Programs and start offering website hosting packages, get-rich-quick schemes, Amazon.com books, CDs, etc. It is tacky and simply doesn’t work.
I only recommend products or services that my target market wants. This is extremely important, so I'll repeat it again. I only become part of Affiliate Programs for sites that have products or services that my target market wants. Notice I did not say "needs" here, I said "wants"… there is a big difference. People buy things impulsively because they "want" them, not necessarily because they "need" them. There are very few products in the world which people "need". Don't get caught up in the “more is better” attitude, it generally isn't. Just because one vitamin a day is good for you doesn't necessarily mean that 5 vitamins a day are better! If you put up too many Affiliate Programs on your site you end up flooding your market, confusing your visitors, and you won't end up making a whole lot of money. So remember to stay targeted!

Rule Number Six:

Deal with a reputable company. If you are ever concerned about a company you are thinking about doing business with, ask for references and do some checks on them. You want to make sure they are very professional. For example if you phone them and they are rude or put you on hold forever, or if you get an answering machine - be concerned about that as the customers you recommend to them will be getting the same thing. If you email them, they should respond within a couple of days, at maximum, and hopefully within the same day if at all possible. You'd be very surprised at how many companies will put you in "voice mail hell" or will not respond to your emails within a couple of days - or ever.

Customer response is a very important thing. When you have a problem or a concern (maybe you didn't get your check on time or you have a question about a sale)… and you call or email a company, you want to know that they'll take care of it right away. If you are asking questions about a company's Affiliate Program and get no answer (or a delayed answer)… be wary. If they can't even take care of you when you express an interest in becoming an affiliate, then you probably have a pretty good idea that they won't take care of you when you have a problem. You can also guess that they won't take very good care of your customers either!

So be very careful, the company you deal with should be very professional and willing to help you out when you're in need. On that note, although it is a little off topic… customer service and the speed at which you respond to email or phone messages, is critical.

For example, we now get over 500 emails a day at this office, and we make it a point to answer all the emails (barring a natural disaster) by the end of the day (48 hours if there is a natural disaster) - weekends excluded. I attribute this attitude as a major reason for the incredible success of my companies on the Internet.

A Couple of Important Side Notes:

The truth about bulk email and Affiliate Programs!

One of the myths of Affiliate Programs is that if you join a few, put them in an email message and then bulk email thousands (or millions) of people, you will make lots of money. That's not the way to do it. In fact it's probably one of the worst ways to do it for a few reasons:

The first reason is that unsolicited bulk emailing millions of people (i.e. spam) who have not qualified themselves as interested in your product is not very profitable and in a lot of cases you can end up losing a lot of money! I talked about the pros and cons of this in the lesson on bulk email.

Generally speaking, most Affiliate Programs have a spam email clause in their agreement that says that if you spam, you can get terminated from the program and not get paid for any commissions you've earned up to that point. There's also a good chance that if you spam, you'll probably lose your reputation, your Internet connection, and you won't get paid for any commissions you have owing to you.

Wouldn't that be a waste of your time and money?

There are even recent examples of companies billing for the time taken up with dealing with the complaints and administrative problems caused by people who spam their Affiliate Program URL! So you could end up paying out money instead of making money!

When you spam an Affiliate Program URL that is assigned to you, it looks like the company is spamming the recipient directly as the URL you are using is for their website… this can damage their reputation and cause an unlimited amount of problems.

I talk from experience… we've had problems with affiliates spamming in the past. We have had to adopt some very strict spam policies and if any one spams with our Affiliate Program we will terminate him/her instantly and all commissions they have earned are forfeited.

It's very important you don't do this, as it will cause you more havoc than anything else. I can't think of one Affiliate Program that will actually allow you to spam to get sales.

Another thing to pay attention to is exclusivity clauses in the agreement. A few Affiliate Programs state, "they can be the only retailer of a specific product on your site". So say for example you join up with a book selling program, they may state in their contract that you can only sell "their" books and can't be a part of any other book related Affiliate Program. Or say you join an Affiliate Program in which you are recommending a website designer... they might have a clause in the agreement that says that you can only recommend and link to their website design company, and no other. So just be careful not to restrict yourself if that isn’t what you want to do.
